AL: Telecommunication 2010, market with 4 mobile operators
After the introduction of a 4th mobile operator, it seems that the telecommunication sector will have the biggest growth in 2010.
Albanian State Minister Genc Pollo, presenting the paper “On electronic communications sector policies”, said that it would bring many improvements to the country’s electronic communications sector. “Albania’s current mobile telephony penetration exceeds 100 percent which is almost equal to the EU average of 111 percent,” Pollo stated. He added that the usage of the internet service has increased by 30 times during the last year. According to him, it was time for the country’s market to adapt the new technologies of electronic communications. The paper defines the mid-term strategy of the government in frame of the electronic communications development. Pollo added that since 1999, the sector had experienced many developments in Albania including here the passing of the operators from the ownership of the state to private ownership. According to him, many investments had been performed in this frame making the demand for mobile telephony quickly increase in comparison to the traditional fixed telephony. Pollo said that one of the country’s challenges included the increase of the broadband in the country.
This paper has been updated after 11 years, taking in consideration the latest technology developments. Meantime, the Head of the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority, Piro Xhixho said that the entrance of eth 4th mobile operator is expected to create new impulses in the market. “The document will provide further market liberalization, equality for the operators, as well as improvement of competitiveness,” Xhixho said. He added that telecommunication is one of the most dynamic sectors in the market, marking an annual growth of 35% in the third quarter of 2009.
