AL: Mobiles, “Number Portability” available in 2010
The “Number Portability” service is going to become available this year.
According to the Authority of Electronic Communications, this service would increase competition in the market because the operators would have to draw their ultimate weapons; the tariffs. Head of AEC Piro Xhixho declared that the authority has prepared a new document which sets new legal rules. “This is the time for new technologies and a sensible usage of the new frequencies”, Xhixho stated.
One of the problems today in Albania is the absence of optic fibers which would introduce high-speed internet in the market. Xhixho says that the operators should be allowed to use the public and private infrastructure. The penetration of mobile telephony in Albania is over 100%, landline telephony stands at 11.2% while internet at 10%. Meantime, the 4th mobile phone operator is expected to enter the market soon enough. The tariffs methodology approved by the AEC has affected the mobile tariffs but even the operators have considerably reduced them during the past two years. The reduction will continue even in 2010.
