Mobile companies, the retail tariffs are reversed

The Authority of the Postal and Electronic Communications has reversed the retail tariff regulations for AMC and Vodafone Albania.

In 2007 the Regulatory Telecommunications Office had decided on the retail tariff regulations for AMC and Vodafone Albania in the 2 main prepaid tariffing plans Albakarta and Vodafone Karta. The decision was implemented in 2008 as based on the respective methodology, the Council of Ministers approved the detailed reduction on the retail tariffs but recently AKEP has judged that the measures taken have already had their effect and the regulation of the retail market of mobile communications is not anymore necessary.

AKEP estimates that with the consolidation of the third operator and with the expected launch of the fourth operator on the market, the retail market is already competitive. The new decision of AKEP will be implemented on July 1 of this year, but while the regulations for the retail market have been removed, the regulation of the wholesale market will continue to be the same. The three mobile communication operators in our country have a considerable influence on the market. AKEP has taken this decision after the ratification of the final version of the mobile communication markets analysis.

For AMC and Vodafone this status has existed ever since, while for Eagle Mobile it is the first time to be specified as such. Meanwhile as a consequence of the mobile tariff reduction for 2009, a doubling of the outgoing calls from the consumers as being noticed as compared to last year, approximately from 30 to 60 minutes. Actually there are over 4 million users of mobile communication in Albania, which means that the member of users is the same as in the countries of EU.
