Android Apps will overtake Apple's in 5 years

According a forecast in a recent report by Ovum, in the next few years we gonna see how Android applications will prevail over the most successful Apple Store Apps now. Apple has enjoyed for so long its domination on the App Store market with generation of 67% of smartphone app downloads last year. Now the predictions from Ovum says that the company will be overtaken by Google's Android by 2015.

In the next 5 years the Android's share of the app store market will grow from the current 14% to 26%, compared to Apple's 22%, the research firm has predicted. The percentage for the Symbian app downloads is expected to be a 19% share. Currently Symbian has 49% share of the mobile phone OS, but accounts for just 9% of downloads. RIM's BlackBerry will more than triple its share of the app download market from 5% to 17%.

"The iPhone generates the lion's share of smartphone app downloads but over the period we will see the share of application downloads becoming more equally distributed," Ovum principal analyst Michele Mackenzie said.

While North America will continue to be the largest market for app stores, its lead will likely decrease from 57% of the market in 2009 to just 31% in 2015. Asia-Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing region, with a share of 20% by 2015.
